01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Descend the stairs into the basement and the bustle outside gives way to a warm, welcoming space. Near Shinjuku-gyoenmae Station, Bistro CLOVER pairs approachable bistro cooking with thoughtful touches and a generous selection of wines and other drinks to enjoy at ease.

Appetite-opening small plates and colourful starters

A good place to begin is the “mayo tama,” the bistro’s take on oeuf mayo, a French classic, topped generously with bottarga. A soft-boiled egg is layered with house-made mayonnaise and the savoury saltiness of Italian bottarga, making it a pleasing match for a first drink. Fruit brings a bright note to other starters, including creamy burrata with seasonal fruit and fruit butter pairing dried fruit with ricotta’s gentle sweetness and savoury edge.

A signature meat dish, crisp outside and juicy within

One of the signature dishes is an Ezo deer cutlet, listed on the menu as made with deer from Hokkaido. The menu describes it as Ezo deer paired with a house sauce and finished slowly in the oven, resulting in a fried dish that is light to eat. Red wine is suggested alongside it. As the dish takes time to cook, the recommendation is to order it with your first round.

For a shared table or a relaxed evening on your own

Other hot dishes include an omelette with salty shirasu and a kick of green chilli, finished with a squeeze of lemon, as well as rich chicken liver mousse sharpened with balsamic vinegar. One diner who visited alone noted that the amount of food could be adjusted; the counter also makes a comfortable spot to linger over a glass of wine at your own pace. To finish, choose between a chai pudding fragrant with spices and a rich chocolate terrine, then let the conversation linger a little longer.
